Moonstone – The Stone of Light and Intuition
There are stones that seem to have moonlight trapped within them. The moonstone is one of them — it shimmers, flows, and glows from within, as if a full moon were shining through it. 🌙
What is a moonstone?
Moonstone belongs to the feldspar group and owes its name to the fascinating optical phenomenon of adularescence: a whitish-blue light appears to float inside the stone and moves when the stone is turned.
This phenomenon is created by wafer-thin layers of different feldspars that refract and scatter light — like a miniature rainbow.
Moonstone in History
Moonstones have been revered as sacred stones since antiquity. In India, it is considered a holy stone — a piece of frozen moonlight. In Greek and Roman mythology, it was associated with the moon goddesses Selene and Diana.
In modern times, moonstone became a symbol of Art Nouveau — jewelry designers like René Lalique used it extensively in their legendary creations.
The Different Moonstones
White Moonstone — the classic moonstone with a white to bluish shimmer. The most coveted type.
Rainbow Moonstone — actually a variety of Labradorite, with a colorful shimmer in blue, purple, and green.
Peach Moonstone — with a warm orange-pink tone, particularly delicate and feminine.
Black Moonstone — dark base tone with a bluish shimmer. Mysterious and rare.
Caring for Moonstone
Moonstone has a Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5, making it moderately durable:
- Protect from impacts and scratches
- Clean with warm water and mild soap
- Store separately
- Avoid strong heat
