Emerald – The King of Green Gemstones

Emerald – The King of Green Gemstones

May 6, 2026

For millennia, it has captivated kings, empresses, and jewelry lovers worldwide. The emerald — its rich, deep green is unmistakable and, like no other stone, symbolizes elegance, wealth, and nature. 💚

What is an Emerald?

Emerald is a variety of the mineral beryl — the same family includes aquamarine and morganite. Its characteristic green color is caused by chromium and vanadium in the crystal lattice.

The world's finest emeralds come from Colombia — particularly from the Muzo and Chivor mines. Other significant deposits are found in Zambia, Brazil, Zimbabwe, and Afghanistan.

Emerald in History

Emeralds were mined in ancient Egypt — Cleopatra was known for her passion for these stones. The Incas and Aztecs revered emeralds as sacred stones. In the Bible, emerald is one of the twelve gemstones on the High Priest's breastplate.

The "Jardin" — the Garden in the Stone

Almost all emeralds have inclusions — fine cracks and mineral traces referred to as "jardin" (garden). Unlike other gemstones, these inclusions in emeralds are not considered flaws but rather characteristics of authenticity and part of the stone's character.

Emerald Quality

Color is the most important quality characteristic. The ideal emerald green is a rich, medium green with a slight bluish tint — not too dark, not too light.

Caring for Emeralds

Emeralds are durable with a Mohs hardness of 7.5 to 8, but their inclusions make them more fragile than other stones:

  • Never use an ultrasonic cleaner
  • Clean gently with warm water and mild soap
  • Protect from knocks and drops
  • Store separately
