Larimar – The Caribbean Sea Stone

Larimar – The Caribbean Sea Stone

May 6, 2026

Some stones carry the sea within them. Larimar is one of them. 🌊

Its turquoise-blue and sky-white patterns are reminiscent of the Caribbean Sea from above — of waves, clouds, and the horizon. No wonder the locals once called it the "Stone of the Sea."

What is Larimar?

Larimar is a rare variety of the mineral pectolite and is found in only one place in the world: in the Dominican Republic, in a small mountain village called Los Chupaderos. The mining area is tiny — a few hundred meters in diameter.

Its characteristic blue color is caused by copper in the rock. The more copper, the more intense the blue — the deep blue stones are the rarest and most valuable.

The Legend of Larimar

The Taíno indigenous people of the Caribbean knew this stone for centuries and believed it was a gift from the sea — created where earth and ocean touch. In 1974, Larimar was "rediscovered" by a local jeweler and named after his daughter Larissa and the Spanish word for sea (mar): Larimar.

Why Larimar is So Special

Larimar carries the colors of the Caribbean Sea within it — no two stones are alike. Each Larimar is a unique picture of blue, white, and turquoise, painted by nature over millions of years.

In gemstone lore, Larimar is considered a stone of tranquility, clarity, and peace. It is said to help reduce stress and calm the mind — like a seaside vacation you always carry with you.

Caring for Larimar

With a Mohs hardness of 4.5 to 5, Larimar is a more delicate stone:

  • Protect from contact with water and chemicals
  • Do not store in direct sunlight — the color may fade
  • Clean gently with a dry cloth
  • Store separately from harder stones
